Start by wearing clothes of a weight you think you'll be wearing when you use the jacket you want to buy. If the jacket is for summer riding you'll probably measure over a tee shirt. If you are buying a jacket for winter, you'll measure over heavier clothing. Choosing a good size is primarily determined by your chest measurement. Measure around your entire chest just below your armpits keeping the measuring tape horizontal. Don't pull it tight, just barely take up the slack and get your reading. Compare your chest measurement to this size chart. For example if your chest measures 44 inches and you want a really snug-fit jacket go for size M, otherwise go for size L.
