The C5 Corvette is an awesome sport car, but like any vehicle it does have a few flaws. The Column Lock Fail is the worst of them. This issue could leave you stranded in need of a tow with no warning before it happens. I own a 02' ZO6 since it was new and prefer to do all the maintenance myself. When GM issued a recall on the column lock I never took the Corvette in. The reports in the Corvette forums indicated that it would not help with the 6 speed Corvette and just did not want the dealership handling my Corvette. I was well aware of this issue but when there is not a problem it is hard to take the time to fix something that might be a problem at some point down the road. Well, my luck ran out and found myself stranded on a cold night downtown. Hours later it made it home by a tow truck and the next morning I went out to try it one last time just to find that it unlocked and was working again. Needless to say, by the end of the week I installed this column bypass and put this issue to rest for good.
