Computer hardware with resident software that collects and analizes engine outputs and adjusts engine inputs to optize performance. Sensors and meters operate at strategic locations throughout the vehicle to provide data to the computer. The computer compares the engine performance to stored ranges for those given inputs and adjusts fuel, air and other engine operations to bring the readings to their optimum level. Computer managed engines evolved with the advent of electronic fuel injection and initially replaced mecanical timing mechanisims. Their role eventually expanded to include a large variety of inputs as manufacturers strove for higher performance and better fuel economy.
