The 3M PPS Paint Preparation System is a complete system for mixing, preparing, and spraying finishing and coating materials. The flexible liners and lid filters work with the corresponding size rigid mixing cup and collar, which is the PPS Mixing Cup and Collar (sold separately). The system produces cleaner jobs, saves on solvent usage and gun cleaning time, and can improve operator efficiency by as much as 15%. Since the PPS system uses the same cup for mixing and spraying, there is less risk of outside contamination and less time spent mixing and cleaning. Specifically designed adapters (sold separately) allow technicians to use the PPS system with virtually any spray gun.

Less Cleaning

PPS replaces traditional mixing cups and filters and drastically reduces the amount of solvent required for gun cleaning. The liner, lid with built-in filter are all disposable, leaving only the adapter and spray gun to be cleaned. It is possible to clean your spray gun with as little as 3 ounces of solvent. With these disposable parts, shops can see a 70% reduction in cleaning solvent use, meaning less operator exposure to solvents and volatile organic compounds (VOCs).

Functions at Any Angle

Many technicians mix more paint or coating than they need to reduce the chance of starving the gun. PPS allows technicians to spray at any angle without starving the gun. Paint or other coating is mixed in a liner bag which marries to a direct filter and is then mounted on the spray gun with a dedicated adapter. As freshly filtered coating is dispensed, the liner bag collapses, allowing the spray gun to function at any angle. The PPS System also provides the ability to stay 90 degrees to the surface from any angle, even upside down, which optimizes material transfer, and helps reduce material waste.

Environmental Impact

The 3M PPS System helps shops in the United States meet the requirements of EPA Rule 40 CFR Part 63 - Subpart 6H, which went into effect in 2011. The rule, designed to reduce the release of targeted hazardous air pollutants, requires that individuals working in regions that allow touch-up and spot repair outside of a spray booth to use hand-held spray devices with a maximum cup size of 3 ounces or less when performing such activities. Additional environmental impact is achieved by helping shops manage their volatile organic compound (VOC) emissions, eliminate separate mixing cups and filters, and reduce waste of paint, coatings, and cleaners.

Waterborne paint systems are better for the environment, but the water interacts negatively with traditional metal cups so using plastic cups and liners eliminates that problem. In addition, the PPS System minimizes paint transfers, allowing operators to mix smaller quantities of paint or to easily switch colors between repairs without disposing of the paint. This can help reduce the amount of paint required for a job by as much as 2 to 4 ounces per mix, leading to significant cost and waste reductions.
