The Receiver-Drier store a refrigerant reserve to ensure a constant liquid supply to the expansion valve. A strainer and drying agent (called desiccant) are inside the receiver drier to remove moisture and clean the refrigerant. The Receiver/drier should be replaced any time the system is opened for service, and most compressor warranties require it.
