The function of the accumulator is to catch and trap liquid refrigerant from the evaporator to protect the compressor. The accumulator also contains a strainer and desiccant for refrigerant cleaning and purification. The Accumulator should be replaced any time the system is opened for service, and most compressor warranties require it.
