The heat riser is a very important emission devise. It's purpose is to heat the intake manifold on cold start up by redirecting exhaust gas through the intake manifold. As vehicles age, these parts can become seized or corroded to the point that they no longer operate. Broken heat risers can cause the vehicle to run poorly.
